Lauren Hunkin Repeats One Week After First-Ever June 30, 2008 STE. JUSTINE DE NEWTON, QUEBEC, JUNE 29, 2008 Twenty-eight-year-old Lauren Hunkin, of Caledon, Ontario, is already making a habit of something she had never done just over a week ago. One week to the day after her first-ever grand prix victory, Hunkin, repeated, scoring her second grand prix victory. The win came in the same venue and on the same horse as last week’s win. In the $25,000 grand prix at Beaulieu’s Summer Classic II, Hunkin rode her 10-year-old German-bred gelding, Larry, to defeat almost the same field as a week ago. She was not the only one who repeated last week’s performance. Last week’s second-place finisher, Gabrielle Cousin on Aramisse des Pins, finished runner-up again. Last week’s third place finisher, Laurie Bucci, claimed third again, but this time on a different mount. Bucci was aboard Z Girl this week. Hunkin out-paced Cousin and Bucci in the tie-breaker by a large margin, stopping the clock at 38.82 seconds to Cousin’s 41.60 and Bucci’s 45.52. The other entries in the five-way jump-off had knockdowns. “It’s feels a little strange this time”, Hunkin said, “I wasn’t expecting it. It feels good going ahead”, she said, but is cautious about getting over-confident, adding, “You never know what the next day will bring”. Hunkin has been training with Ian Millar for several years. With Millar in Calgary preparing for the Olympic Games, Hunkin is competing in Quebec under the tutelage of Millar’s daughter, Amy, and son, Jonathon. Jonathon Millar was also part of today’s jump-off,on Fahrenheit. Hunkin has been partnered with Larry for just over a year. |

Carlsen and La Boom recently finished 10th in the $1,000,000 CN International Grand Prix, at the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament on September 12. Covert-Lawrence of St.Lazare, QC, will ride Utan, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by the Eastwood Group. Covert-Lawrence, 34, and Utan won the $32,000 Brookstreet/CompetitiveJumpers.com Open Welcome at the CSI2* National Capital Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON, on August 19. Riding Larry 0146, a 12-year-old black Oldenburg gelding owned by Synergy Farm, Hunkin, 30, of Kemptville, ON, won the $90,000 Summer Festival CSI2* Grand Prix on August 8 at the Summer Festival in Palgrave, ON. “When we asked for expressions of interest for this trip, we received a tremendous response with 15 riders submitting their names for consideration,” said Mark Laskin of Langley, BC, who will act as the Canadian Show Jumping Team chef d’équipe in Buenos Aires. “Cutting the list down to four riders was a difficult task. I feel that the four that we ultimately picked, Angela, Lauren, Lisa and Samantha, are deserving of being selected. They have all had very successful seasons so far this year. With three of the riders being first-time members, they already bring excitement and enthusiasm to the trip.” Laskin added, “This competition is a qualifier for the promotional league final next year, so it is an important event for us. I expect that the group we have chosen will be successful in the Nations’ Cup in Buenos Aires and represent Canada admirably in Argentina.” A Nations’ Cup is the only competition in show jumping where riders, in teams of four, compete as a country. The top three scores from each team are counted towards the final result of the two-round competition. There are only two Nations’ Cup events held annually in North America – the $75,000 FEI Nations’ Cup at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, and the $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament in September. |
